Introduction
Many Australian managers avoid confronting issues and try instead to keep the peace or remain a 'good mate'. However, allowing someone continue to behave or perform below standard is not being a great mate. If a person's performance is not up to standard, or their behaviour is inappropriate, providing them with feedback to make them aware of the situation gives them the opportunity to take action (change, improve, adapt, respond). Addressing issues as they arise also sends an important signal to others that you will take action promptly given that the well-being and performance of the broader team is paramount.

This paper is based on current research and best practice in managing and motivating staff and informed by experience as a line manager, coach, and facilitator. This document is divided into two parts. The first relates to conversations which may result in formal performance management. The second part outlines a well-known approach for addressing behavioural issues called SBI (Situation, Behaviour, Impact).
